‘Caps clinch Western Division title

Whitecaps beat the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0, securing first place in the Western Division and a spot in the playoff rounds.

‘Team of thugs’ brush aside Tornado in two-game sweep

Dallas Tornado head coach Al Miller had labelled Vancouver a “team of thugs” before the first leg. Head coach Tony Waiters’ response needed no words. “We didn’t need a team meeting before the game,” said the former England goalkeeper, “All I had to do was open the dressing room door and throw in the newspapers.”

Empire Stadium was famous for its raucous atmosphere. After the ‘Caps beat the Johan Cruyff-led LA Aztecs, the 32,375 fans became insatiable. “We could hear the ‘White! Caps!’ chant from the locker room for about an hour after the game,” recalls Bobby Lenarduzzi, defender and current ‘Caps president.

The Warner Brothers-backed New York Cosmos boasted some of the biggest names in world soccer. As the players lined up in the tunnel at Giants Stadium, Whitecaps captain, John Craven, made his feelings known. “Who do these guys think they are?” yelled the tough centre back. “They’re a bunch of prima donnas!”

It takes a village: ‘Caps capture Vancouver’s first major title

“Last week, Vancouver became a deserted village, as everyone huddled indoors to watch our telecast of the ‘Caps and the Cosmos,” announced the late ABC sportscaster, Jim McKay, before the match. For the club, the fans, the city, “The Village of Vancouver” became a rallying cry. The ‘Caps went on to beat the Tampa Bay Rowdies, winning Vancouver’s first and only major North American championship.

Dressed in a white suit and a black cowboy hat, Carl Valentine addressed over 100,000 fans at Robson Square. “You are the number one fans,” bellowed the 21-year-old winger, “And we are the number one team!” His words were simple, but the response was wild.
